The Cover Shot of Nirvava’s iconic album, Nevermind, features a baby under water chasing a bank note on a hook, like bait. The shot was taken as the photo stock company wanted $7,500 a year to use their shot. So … Spencer Elden, the son of a friend of the photographer’s, got thrown in!
All grown up … Spencer Elden, below as a 20 year-old, recreates his pose from Nirvana’s Nevermind. He offered to properly recreate the shot but the publicists got the ‘fear’ and decided to have him in his boardshorts. There had already been enough controversy when the album was released. Kurt Cobain wanted a sticker over the boy’s penis saying “If you can’t handle this, you’re a closet paedophile.” They air-brushed it.

Photographing fish under water is one thing, people is quite another. Our skin is more supple leading to disfigurements. The need to breathe causes involuntary movement. The refraction and density of water causes unusual effects.
These are some of my favourites. I hope you enjoy.
